How Charlie Learned To Love Champers

Charlie was born in a wine cellar on a crate of champagne at his parents’ vineyard.  He has been singing ever since dear mother weened him on his first bottle of bubbles aged two and a half. His love for music and dancing was nurtured by local grape-treaders. As a small boy, he would join them in the treading shed where they would play 78s on a gramophone and dance around wildly in the big buckets, and that’s where he discovered all those crazy jazz rhythms. They took him to their hearts and he called it home. His schooling was under the strict tutelage of the order of Dom Perignon monks in French France, Charlie laboured to study the business of putting the fizz into things. As he emerged into the bright sunlight with his first glass of bubbly, he burst into song and realised his new vocation. Alas, one day he was struck between the eyes with great force by a popping champagne cork, and although the bruise has now cleared he just can’t bring himself to drink anything else. Poor thing.

And so, in his tireless pursuit of the fizzy stuff he has become the host of several of London’s wildest underground glittering cabaret nights: at Cellardoor, The Players Theatre Bar, Sopranos of Kensington and The Basement Theatre in Leicester Sq. amongst others. He has also been seen cruising the Caribbean. But from theatres, festival stages and hotels or even in your home Charlie makes ‘em dance like those barmy grape-treaders back home.

Fancy yourself as a flapper? Want to dress up as a dapper dude in white tie and tails? Busting to show off your Black Bottom Could you Charleston like Clara Bow? Show Options

They can provide dance music, background music or cabaret for your party, anniversary, wedding, tea dance or special occasion. The Bubbly Boys dance ‘orchestra’ comprises piano, bass, drums, saxophone and clarinet.

Dance Music

They often provide a set of background music from the Bubbly Boys over dinner and then Charlie leads two more sets for the dancing. This is entirely flexible though and can be tailored to your event. The music they play is specially chosen to get your party hopping. Great jazz tunes from the age of the 78 rpm. Now that’s fast! They give you music from stars of the time: Fred Astaire – Top Hat, White Tie And Tails, Cheek to Cheek; Josephine Baker – You’re Driving Me Crazy; Dick Powell – Plenty of Money And You, Young And Healthy; Jessie Matthews - Gangway!

For the tango connoisseur, we have the classic La Cumparsita, and then why not shake your booty to the salsa beat of Brazil, before cooling off with Cole Porter’s sultry rhumba, Night and Day, or an elegant waltz to Always.

They have a glorious Forty Second Street medley with tap dancing from Charlie!

No party would be complete without our Charleston dance-off-mega-mix. Fifteen minutes of wild, raucous, gay abandon including Keep Young & Beautiful, Yes Sir, That’s My Baby and Five Foot Two, Eyes Of Blue. Then as the finale, Irving Berlin’s sublimely decadent, Puttin’ On The Ritz. Whether your guests know the steps or are happy to just jig about in time they’ll love the charm of this music. We do, and it’s infectious!

Cabaret

These shows are normally booked for 20 to 30 minutes as after dinner cabaret. They can be performed with a trio, piano & bass or just piano. However, we say the more the merrier! The charm of these pieces is the familiarity of the music, the glamour of this vintage style and that special pleasure of having live music at your party.

Let Champagne Charlie take you on his one man romp through the work of the art deco period’s most innovative and sometimes provocative musical film director. The inventor of ‘the backstage drama’, ‘the show within a show’ and birds eye choreography; Busby Berkeley. Listen to some of Hollywood’s greatest music, “The Lullaby of Broadway”, “We’re in the Money” and “Dames” to name but a few. Charlie brings to life the feathers and sequins, the glitter and glamour of the golden age of film with stars such as Ruby Keeler, Al Jolson, Joan Blondell, Dick Powell and Carmen Miranda. “The Gold Diggers”, “42nd Street” and many more are quoted.

After these jolly japes, you’ll want to don a fruit bowl and tap your away into the night.
